ABOUT TANZANIA
Tanzania lies in East Africa between the Indian Ocean, Kenya and Uganda to the north, Rwanda, Burundi, and DR Congo to the west, and Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique to the south.
The country is known for its natural wealth and it is home to three of the seven African wonders: ? The Great Migration in Serengeti National Park ? The Ngorongoro Crater ? Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa The national parks are famous for the multitude of animal species and The Big Five (elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo and rhino) can be found in various parks. Off the coast, tropical islands such as Zanzibar, Mafia, and Pemba can be found, with coral reefs and the most amazing beaches. The name Tanzania was given to the country after the unification of Zanzibar and Tanganyika in 1964. The country nowadays has a population of 62 million people belonging to 120 different tribes. The largest tribes are the Sukuma, Nyamwezi, Haya, Nyakyusa, and Chagga. The most famous tribe are the Maasai. Dar-es-Salaam, with a population of almost 6 million, is the largest city and also the former capital of Tanzania. It is an important economic center, a port city, and one of the fastest-growing cities in the world.

Wildlife in Mikumi National Park
The park has a great variety of animals and most visitors come to this National Park aiming to spot the ‘Big Five’ – cheetah, lion, elephant, buffalo and rhino. Also hippos live in a pair of mud pools and are one of the highlights. Lions overlook their grassy kingdom, which is traversed by herds of zebra, wildebeest, impala and buffalo. Giraffes forage in the isolated acacia stands on the edge of the Mkata River, and shady islets are also favored by Mikumi elephants. Mkata Foodplain is perhaps the most reliable place in Tanzania to see the mighty eland, the largest antelope in the world. The equally impressive great kudu and sable antelope stay in the miombo-covered foothills that rise up on the borders of Mikumi.
Birds in Mikumi
Mikumi is a good place for bird lovers as it is home to more than 400 different species of birds! The Mkata River offers majestic views of fishing Open-billed Storks. Marabou stork, Red-billed oxpeckers, Black-bellied bustard, Francolin, Cattle egret, Guinea-fowls, Hornbill and Malachite Kingfischer are common birds in Mikumi National Park. The most colourful species are the Yellow-throated long claw, the Lilac-breasted roller and the Bateleur eagle. European migrants are common in Mikumi National Park during the rainy season.
